Hardware Gallery already has a few exciting projects in the pipeline for this year, including a return to exhibitions as part of this year’s Sydney Fringe Festival. We will be endeavouring to keep you all posted on further developments over coming months and in particular keeping all of the artists informed of exhibition opportunities – there will be MANY… and these will include exhibitions at some of Sydney’s most exciting venues and a few new ones you may not have heard of before. Make sure you are also subscribed to our artists mailing list to hear more about these opportunities by visiting our website.

On a more immediate note, The Sydney Fringe is launching artists registrations in a few weeks with a special night of entertainment at Venue 505 in Surry Hills. Entry will include free artist registration for 2012.

Hardware Gallery closed its doors in Enmore on Saturday 17th December. This will be a new beginning for all of the staff and the gallery itself. I personally will be taking up my new role as general manager of The Sydney Fringe Festival from January and look forward to working with the many talented and often under recognised creative artists in Sydney. It will be an exciting time for arts in Sydney as The Sydney Fringe heads into its third year and builds on the great success of 2010 and 2011.

Thankyou
Thankyou to Romy for managing our framing services and workshop for over two years and for the conception and curation of Sound Series in 2010 and 2011. Sound Series will continue with Romy in 2012.

Congratulations to Tim for a highly successful result in his final year completing his BA in fine art and design at ACU. As you will know, he has been an asset to the gallery and we look forward to working with him in 2012.

Thankyou to the countless artists and performers who have help build Hardware Gallery over the past 12 years. None of it would have been possible without you. There are simply too many people to list, but as I have expressed personally, your input to the gallery both creatively and professionally has been the key ingredient to all of our continued success and I look forward to working with many of you again in the future.

Thankyou to our extremely supportive partners and sponsors who have provided invaluable support to date and in particular, The Beer and Cider Co. who most of you will now be familiar with as the Australian importers of the best beers and ciders from the UK, Ireland and Belgium.

Our time in Sydney’s Innerwest has been amazing and the goals achieved have been beyond our expectations on every level. In these past six years we have had the honour of participating in a dramatic and very positive change in the local area. Thankyou to our wonderful neighbours who have made us feel extremely welcome and proud to be a small part of such great progress and cultural change in the neighbourhood.

And thankyou to YOU, for visiting, viewing, appreciating and supporting the exhibitions and events we have curated over the past 12 years. As I have discussed with many of you individually over recent weeks, Hardware Gallery will continue into the future with several exciting projects being developed for 2012 and beyond. We hope you continue to support our projects and follow us via our newsletter and on the website, where we will keep you all posted on future developments and artist opportunities.

Dozens of knitted artworks and embroided watercolours will feature in Hardware Gallery’s next and final exhibition in an earnest but playful analysis of letting go. What I Had I Gave Away is a joint exhibition by two young, but very experienced artists. Both Thomas and Amanda have made a big contribution to Hardware Gallery’s group exhibitions this year and last, and their combined December show rounds off a very busy year on other projects for both artists.

This exhibition will also be the final one in our current premises in Enmore. We have had a fantastic, record breaking six years in our current location and with many exciting projects happening for all of us in 2012, it has been decided that its the right time to move on. There will be more information sent out over coming weeks. Please do make the effort to drop in before our final day on December 17th and in particular make sure you don’t miss out on the last opening night on Tuesday 6th December: What I Had I Gave Away

What I Had I Gave Away is an exhibition of small soft sculptures and large watercolour and embroidery drawings and is the second part of a two-part show by Amanda Humphries and Thomas C. Chung. The first exhibition: All I Have I Hope To Keep was shown at Gallery Eight in September 2011.

In part one the duo were chasing the shadow, and freezing the real, accentuating the constant representations of life through making toys and embroidering ambitions. Everything was detached and preserved in this ever sensation-simulated world.

Just as part one is based on permanence and plasticity, then part two starts to contemplate its opposite. Processes of abandon and dissolve, of letting go, rather than holding on; the two shows are threading together the dance created between permanence and temporality, often employing the ‘double’ as a common vehicle for such concerns, whether through an awareness of time sequence (before and after shots) with Thomas’ soft sculpture and running narrative, or through shadowed imagery with Amanda’s use of contrasting mediums, light fluid bodies with heavily embroidered shadows, butterflied machines and lovers.

Taking into consideration the name of the venue Hardware Gallery, the art works occasionally play with tools and hardware as their subjects, often casting them in an organic light.

There is a certain amount of acceptance in this show, of our fragility and decay, and with the cyclical nature of the two show themes rotating and jousting. The work appeals to the holistic nature of the relationship between the real and the imagined.

This month Hardware Gallery will show a series of paintings by Stephen Bradley, who has been actively involved in a wide range of creative arts projects since the early ‘80s. Such projects have seen him be at various times a novelist, playwright, producer, musician, film maker and painter. In more recent years, he has been known for his curatorial work at Transfield in Sydney and as Chair of the Walsh Bay Arts Alliance.

The exhibition, Sub will be the culmination of nearly two decades work and sees the artist bringing together his curatorial knowledge and creative processes, which rely heavily on intuitive and subconscious thought. What Bradley describes as a stream of consciousness process, began as he repainted over his own older works and this soon developed into a thirst for new surfaces, leading Bradley to try for the first time to paint over found, discarded canvases. Soon people who knew of his project started gifting him rejected paintings they had stumbled upon. As Bradley notes “It has struck me that many of the most interesting and important marks in the most recent paintings were not made by me. “

In the past decade, whilst continuing to pursue a variety of projects, including writing and music, Bradley has worked for Transfield as the manager and curator of the company’s art collection. In 2006, at the Sofitel Hotel, he curated Transfield and the Biennale – an exhibition of works from Biennales of Sydney and by people who had exhibited in Biennales. Shortly afterwards he led the team that produced the memorial service for Franco Belgiorno-Nettis at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2007 he was a guest judge for Salon de Refusés: the alternative Archibald and Wynne Prize Selection, at the SH Ervin Gallery and in 2011 was judge of the Sydney Fringe Festival fine art award.

During his time at Transfield, Bradley had the opportunity to work with Franco Belgiorno-Nettis on a daily basis. “Franco was a force; it was a highly entertaining and unforgettable experience.’ His work at Transfield has helped him to establish a firm understanding of the disciplines and governance inherent in major arts institution such as the Biennale of Sydney.

Featuring paintings from 1993 to 2011, Sub will be the artist’s first solo exhibition in Australia having previously exhibited in London, Belgium, New Zealand and France and participated in over 20 exhibitions overseas throughout the 1990s.

Sub opens November 22nd and runs until December 3rd, 2011. More information – http://bit.ly/uI3Z1e
